WhatsApp has begun testing a screen sharing feature for Android users. This new feature will allow users to show the contents of their screen to other participants during a video call. Screen sharing is already available on other communication apps like Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and Skype.
How It Works
According to WABetaInfo, a WhatsApp feature tracker, the screen sharing feature is available on version 2.23.11.19 of WhatsApp beta for Android. The feature is denoted by an icon of an arrow atop a rectangular screen. Once tapped, the standard Android recording/casting popup asking for consent will appear. After granting permission, users will see a message informing them that screen sharing has begun.
Benefits of Screen Sharing
This feature can be especially useful in situations where technical assistance is required remotely. Users can provide assistance to friends or family members by sharing their screen. Once the process is completed, users can simply tap the “Stop sharing” button to end the session.
Security Concerns
It is important to note that the contents of the screen are continuously transmitted over an encrypted connection to other users on the call. This means that any passwords entered, visible payment information, photos, notes, and other media that appears on the screen will also be visible (and audible) to other participants on the call.
While the feature has only been rolled out to some beta users, it is expected to be available to all users in the near future. However, it may not work on older versions of Android or in large group calls. As with any new feature, users should exercise caution and be aware of the security risks. Overall, the screen sharing feature is a valuable addition to WhatsApp’s suite of communication tools.
