WhatsApp is now testing a new feature for its Android beta testers that allows users to log on to WhatsApp Web using their phone number. Currently, users are required to scan a QR code with their smartphone to access the web version of the messaging service. However, with the latest testing version of WhatsApp for Android, users have the option to sign in on their browser using their mobile number. This feature can be especially useful for individuals whose phone’s camera is not working properly. In addition to this, WhatsApp is also developing new filters to improve chat sorting on its beta version for Android.
The new feature, spotted by feature tracker WABetaInfo on version 2.23.14 of WhatsApp beta for Android, can be accessed by tapping on the three-dot menu at the top right corner of the screen. From there, users can select “Linked devices,” then “Link a device” to authenticate using their phone’s fingerprint scanner or by entering their phone PIN or password. On the following screen, users will see the QR code scanner along with a new option at the bottom called “Link with phone number.”
By tapping on this new button, a screen will appear prompting the user to open WhatsApp Web and click on “Link with phone number.” After entering their phone number, users will receive an 8-digit code that must be entered on the WhatsApp app on their phone to complete the device linking process. Gadgets 360 has confirmed that this feature is visible and functions as described on the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android.
It’s important to note that the current version of WhatsApp beta for Android only supports phone number logins on the Web interface and does not support signing in using a mobile number on WhatsApp Desktop or secondary mobile devices. There is no information available regarding when WhatsApp will extend this functionality to its iOS app or when the feature will be rolled out to stable update channel users on Android.
New Chat Filters for Improved Organization
In addition to the phone number login feature, WhatsApp is also working on new chat filters to help users organize their messages more effectively. These filters can be accessed by tapping on the navigation tabs, which have been relocated to the bottom of the chat app. WhatsApp has introduced new filters such as “All,” “Unread,” “Personal,” and “Business.” These filters allow users to group their chats based on whether they have been opened or are still unread. Additionally, users can easily view their WhatsApp Business chats by selecting one of the four filters.
This new feature, discovered by WABetaInfo, is currently in development and aims to enhance the user experience by providing a more streamlined way to manage and navigate through chats. With just a couple of taps, users can filter their messages and access specific chat categories based on their preferences.
WhatsApp is continuously working on improving its platform by introducing new features. The ability to log on to WhatsApp Web using a phone number instead of a QR code provides convenience for users, especially those experiencing camera issues.
