Meta’s Threads is a promising platform aiming to rival Twitter, targeting celebrities, companies, and governments. After an initially lackluster launch, Threads recently launched its web version, a move expected to attract professionals and media users who predominantly engage with social media on their computers during working hours. With Instagram head Adam Mosseri announcing the web version’s release, the team behind Threads is actively working to enhance its functionality and user experience in the upcoming weeks.

Until now, Threads was solely accessible as a mobile app for iPhone and Android users. However, with the introduction of its web version, Threads aims to address user concerns and rekindle interest. By providing an alternative platform for commentary and news, Threads seeks to position itself against Twitter, which has faced its fair share of challenges since its acquisition by Elon Musk’s X.

Despite a record-breaking number of downloads upon its release, Threads experienced a rapid decline in usage. Even celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Tom Brady, who were given privileged early access to the app, posted infrequently, highlighting the platform’s shortcomings. In contrast, X continues to dominate the social media landscape, but its effectiveness has been compromised due to the chaotic management changes and subsequent user dissatisfaction. As a result, users are seeking alternatives to meet their social media needs.

Company Similarweb conducted an analysis that demonstrated the declining daily active users on the Android version of Threads. The data revealed a drop from a peak of 49.3 million users to just 10.3 million. This significant decrease in engagement underscores the urgency for Threads to rectify its shortcomings and provide a robust user experience to retain and attract more users.

Despite the challenges faced by Threads, CEO Mark Zuckerberg remains optimistic about the platform’s potential. He acknowledged the need for stabilization before focusing on community growth, emphasizing that it will take time to establish Threads as a compelling social media platform. While the web version launch is an important step forward, Meta is yet to navigate the complexities of European Union data privacy legislation, which has resulted in Threads not being available in Europe.

Threads’ introduction of a web version marks a significant milestone in its journey to rival Twitter. By targeting professionals and media types who are more active on social media during working hours, Threads aims to capture a niche market. While the initial response was underwhelming, the integration of additional functionality and improvements to the user experience could help revive interest in the platform. However, in a competitive landscape dominated by X, Threads still has a long way to go to establish itself as a formidable contender. Only time will tell if Threads can rise to the occasion and become a go-to platform for celebrities, companies, and governments.
