The seventh edition of the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2023 commenced with great enthusiasm as it was inaugurated by none other than Prime Minister Modi at Bharat Mandapam. This year’s event was centered around the theme of Global Digital Innovation and brought together exhibitors who showcased cutting-edge technologies such as satellite communication, 6G demo, and various other use cases. The first day of the event witnessed the presence of esteemed dignitaries like Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio, Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, and Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of Aditya Birla Group, attending the inaugural session of IMC 2023.
One of the first major announcements made during the event was the establishment of 100 5G labs across India. These labs aim to promote the involvement of students, professors, startups, and MSMEs in the development of 5G technology across various fields such as health, agriculture, and manufacturing. The labs will be set up in academic institutions across multiple states including Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Manipur, Telangana, Karnataka, and more. Leading institutions like IIT Guwahati, IIT Silchar, Delhi Technological University, Jamia Hamdard University, Birla Institute of Technology Mesra, and others have been named as locations for these labs.
Revolutionary Satellite-Based Gigabit Broadband
Reliance Jio took the opportunity to showcase the country’s first satellite-based Gigabit broadband service at IMC 2023. This groundbreaking service aims to bring high-speed internet access to previously inaccessible geographies. During the event, Jio demonstrated how internet connectivity has been established in four remote locations including Gir Gujarat, Korba Chattisgarh, Nabrangpur Odisha, and Jorhat Assam. However, there is no official information regarding the widespread availability of this service for users.
Another highlight of the event was the presentation of Jio Glass, a mixed-reality handset, by Reliance Jio. Jio Glass, previously announced at the company’s 43rd annual general meeting, was available for demonstration paired with a OnePlus Nord smartphone. Although our interaction with Jio Glass was brief, it left a positive impression.
Exploring the Future with Nokia’s 6G Network
Nokia showcased its 6G network, which promises to revolutionize the way we perceive and interact with the digital world. This network acts as a radar, enabling it to sense objects, people, and movements without compromising privacy. The situational awareness provided by this technology creates a digital 6th sense for individuals, allowing them to gather information about their surroundings, see beyond physical barriers, and even interact with objects from a distance. Nokia presented a live demonstration of this 6G sensing capability using prototype radio equipment.
In addition to their 6G network, Nokia also highlighted their collaboration with Alstom to deliver a private wireless network for NCRTC (National Capital Region Transport Corporation) Delhi to Meerut RRTS (Rapid Rail Transit System). This collaboration aims to create the world’s first LTE/4.9G private wireless network that supports the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 Signaling. The deployment of this private network ensures the continuous receipt of movement authorities by trains, enhancing safety and efficiency. The RRTS, known for its low emissions and average speeds of 100 kmph, will significantly reduce travel time and road congestion.
Enhancing 5G Connectivity and Use Cases with Ericsson and Airtel
Ericsson, in collaboration with Airtel and Qualcomm, demonstrated the capabilities of Reduced Capability (RedCap) solution. RedCap is a new software solution developed by Ericsson that aims to reduce complexity and extend the battery life of devices while delivering higher data rates and speeds. It enables new 5G use cases and allows for more 5G connections from devices such as smartwatches, wearables, industrial sensors, and AR/VR devices. Ericsson’s pre-commercial RedCap software was successfully tested on the Airtel 5G network earlier this month. Airtel also showcased its AI-powered Self-Optimizing Network (A-SON), which detects anomalies and resolves them using AI without manual intervention. Designed to predict and address future network issues, A-SON promises to improve network experiences for Airtel users.
Expanding Connectivity with Airtel Xtream AirFiber
Airtel took the opportunity to showcase its Xtream AirFiber service, which provides connectivity in areas where fiber or broadband connectivity is limited. Currently available in select regions such as Ghaziabad, Faridabad, and Noida, Xtream AirFiber offers an alternative solution to bridge the digital divide and bring reliable internet access to underserved communities.
The India Mobile Congress 2023 proved to be a platform for unveiling cutting-edge technologies and innovations. From the establishment of 5G labs to the demonstration of satellite-based Gigabit broadband and 6G networks, the event showcased the future of digital innovation in India. With industry giants like Reliance Jio, Nokia, Ericsson, and Airtel leading the way, it is evident that India is poised to be at the forefront of the global digital revolution. The IMC 2023 sets the stage for increased collaboration, groundbreaking solutions, and an even more connected future for the country.
