According to the study, 72% of business leaders have expressed their intention to incorporate generative AI into their operations.

However, despite the enthusiasm for generative AI, the study also found that many business leaders have reservations about its implementation. Approximately half of the respondents (51%) expressed concerns related to quality and control, while 49% were worried about safety and security risks. These concerns highlight the need for careful consideration and planning when integrating generative AI into business processes.

Anticipated Impact on Organizational Roles

The study also examined the anticipated impact of adopting generative AI on specific organizational roles within businesses. Data analysts and data scientists were identified as the roles that leaders believed would be most affected, with 44% of respondents expressing this view. Software developers and testers followed closely behind at 37%, while professionals in financial operations and communications roles were also expected to be impacted, with 32% and 30% of respondents respectively recognizing this potential.

The ability of generative AI to assess vast amounts of data and identify patterns makes it highly effective for a range of tasks. It can analyze research data, identify correlations, and make suggestions for further research. Additionally, it can find patterns in code repositories and generate efficient software. These capabilities contribute to its potential impact on various organizational roles.

The study revealed that the primary motivations for embracing generative AI among business leaders are to enhance employee productivity and customer service. Two-thirds (66%) of the leaders recognized the technology’s potential to improve customer service, with 44% specifically interested in providing personalized customer experiences through generative AI.

They see it as a competitive advantage that can help them work smarter rather than harder. The possibilities for internal and external stakeholders to leverage generative AI are extensive, creating ample opportunities for businesses to differentiate themselves and deliver enhanced services.

Matt Jackson, global CTO of Insight, highlighted the virtually limitless use cases for these technologies, leading to a fundamental shift in the nature of work.

He suggested that it could benefit dominant hyper-scalers like Microsoft, who already possess the necessary computing power and research capabilities. While business leaders are excited about the potential of generative AI, the study found that a significant percentage (26%) of professionals expressed concerns about workforce displacement resulting from its implementation. Other concerns raised include the potential limitation of human innovation (39%), budgetary constraints (38%), and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements (35%). Additionally, 38% of respondents worried about human error due to a lack of understanding of how to use the tool or accidental breaches of their organization’s data.

Jackson emphasized the importance of striking a balance between leveraging generative AI and maintaining the central role of humans in decision-making. He highlighted the need for careful consideration and robust governance when integrating this technology. Establishing policies and strategies around generative AI, as well as ongoing review and testing, can help mitigate security risks and ensure that the technology is used effectively.

The study’s findings indicate that generative AI has the potential to significantly impact businesses in various ways. It can enhance productivity, improve customer service, and transform decision-making processes. However, it is crucial for businesses to address concerns and implement proper governance to maximize the potential benefits of generative AI while minimizing risks.
