Production on the highly anticipated fifth and final season of Stranger Things has been delayed due to the ongoing Hollywood writers’ strike. In a tweet, co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer expressed their support for the strike and hope for a fair deal to be reached soon. The strike rules set by the Writers Guild of America prohibit writer-producers from engaging in any writing or creative-based duties for film and television productions during the strike. Netflix has respected the Duffer Brothers’ decision to delay filming until further notice, which is a significant undertaking considering the popularity of the Stranger Things franchise.
Andor Season 2 to Resume Production Without Primary Writer
According to Variety, Andor season 2 is one of the few shows that will continue production amidst the ongoing strike. However, executive producer Tony Gilroy will not be present on set or writing scripts. Gilroy will continue to work on non-writing aspects such as selecting a musical score and casting.
Other Shows Continue Production Despite Strike
Amazon Studios is continuing production on The Lord of the Rings: the Rings of Power season 2 without its showrunners on set, having planned things in advance for the possibility of a writers’ strike. Meanwhile, HBO’s House of the Dragon season 2 executive producer Ryan J. Condal is reportedly present on set in a strictly non-writing capacity, with completed scripts for the season.
Stranger Things Season 5 Filming Delayed
Stranger Things 5 was originally scheduled to begin filming this month, with actor Noah Schnapp revealing that he has a significant role in this season. The Duffer Brothers have a partnership with Netflix for multiple Stranger Things projects, including an animated series and a stage play. The creators previously disclosed the title for episode 1, ‘The Crawl,’ which is primarily set in Hawkins and follows the lead characters’ investigation of the parallel world.
Despite the delay, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos confirmed that the streamer was better prepared than most studios in the event of a writers’ strike. The company’s extensive slate of upcoming movies and shows will keep disruptions to a minimum. There is no release window for Stranger Things season 5 yet, but Andor season 2 is aiming for an August 2024 release on Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar.
