The city of San Francisco has opened a complaint and launched an investigation into a giant “X” sign that was installed on top of the downtown building formerly known as Twitter headquarters. In response, city officials have stated that replacing letters or symbols on buildings, as well as erecting signs, requires a permit for design and safety purposes.

Last Monday, San Francisco police halted workers from removing Twitter’s iconic bird and logo from the building, citing safety concerns for pedestrians due to the lack of proper precautions. The appearance of the “X” followed this incident, prompting further scrutiny from city authorities.

Patrick Hannan, spokesperson for the Department of Building Inspection, explained that any replacement letters or symbols would need a permit to ensure consistency with the building’s historic nature and secure attachment to the sign. Additionally, erecting a sign on top of a building also necessitates obtaining a permit.

Hannan confirmed that the city is now opening a complaint and initiating an investigation into the installation of the sign. He emphasized that planning review and approval are crucial steps in the process to ensure compliance with regulations.

Musk’s Rebranding Efforts

Elon Musk, the owner of the former Twitter headquarters building, has recently unveiled a new “X” logo to replace Twitter’s famous blue bird as part of his ongoing rebranding of the social media platform. Musk, who also serves as the CEO of Tesla, has long been captivated by the letter X, even renaming Twitter’s corporate name to X Corp. following his acquisition in October. Notably, Musk has named one of his children “X,” representing a unique collection of letters and symbols.

On Friday afternoon, a worker was seen making adjustments to the sign using a lift machine before leaving the scene. The fate of the “X” sign remains uncertain as San Francisco’s investigation continues.

The city of San Francisco has taken swift action by launching an investigation and opening a complaint regarding the installation of a giant “X” sign on the former Twitter headquarters building. As the rebranding of the social media platform continues, city officials are emphasizing the importance of obtaining permits to ensure compliance with safety and design regulations. The outcome of the investigation will shed light on the future of this controversial sign.
