Recent statistics provided by Meta show the action taken by Facebook and Instagram in response to user complaints in India. According to the report, Facebook took action on 41 percent of user complaints, while Instagram took action on over 54 percent of grievances raised by users in April 2023. The report provides category-wise information, revealing that Facebook and Instagram failed to take action on many complaints related to partial nudity, harassment, inappropriate content, and fake profiles.

User Tools for Issue Resolution

Both Facebook and Instagram provided tools for users to resolve their issues, but the report shows that these tools were not utilized in a significant number of cases. Facebook received 8,470 grievances from users and provided tools for issue resolution in 2,225 cases. Instagram received 9,676 grievances from users and provided tools for issue resolution in 3,591 cases. However, Instagram only provided tools in around 11 percent of cases where users reported their account being hacked and around 30 percent of cases where users claimed that the content showed partial nudity or sexual acts.

Action Taken by Meta

The report also shows the action taken by Meta against content that violated its community guidelines. Facebook acted on over 27.7 million pieces of content that violated its community guidelines across 13 policies. The top three categories on which Facebook took action comprised 21.7 million spam content, 1.6 million content that violated policies around adult nudity and sexual activity, and 1.4 million for violent and graphic content. Instagram acted against over 5.46 million content on its own. Meta received five orders from the Grievances Appellate Committee (GAC), which it acted upon. The GAC investigates complaints of users who are not satisfied with the resolution of social media majors.
