Karl Urban, popularly known for his roles in The Lord of the Rings movies, The Boys, and Thor: Ragnarok, is reportedly in final discussions to join the cast of the Mortal Kombat sequel. According to The Wrap, Urban is set to play the role of Johnny Cage, a confident action movie star with extensive martial arts training.
About the Mortal Kombat Sequel
Simon McQuoid will return to direct the sequel, while the script is written by Jeremy Slater, known for his work on Moon Knight and The Umbrella Academy. Mortal Kombat is essentially a reboot of the 1990s films, with a grittier approach and the inclusion of brutal finishing moves known as fatalities. The 2021 live-action adaptation focused on the origin story of Scorpion and Sub-Zero’s feud and grossed $84.4 million worldwide against a production budget of $55 million.
The Role of Johnny Cage
Johnny Cage is one of the central characters in the Mortal Kombat titles, sworn to protect Earthrealm from threats while being concerned about looking cool. He was the only lead character left out of the 2021 film, but a post-credits scene teased his appearance in a potential sequel. Urban has prior experience starring in video game projects, having played Doomguy in 2005’s Doom and a voice role in the upcoming Ark: The Animated Series.
The news of Urban’s involvement in Mortal Kombat 2 comes a year after WWE superstar Mike ‘The Miz’ Mizanin expressed his interest in playing Johnny Cage in a potential sequel. The wrestler is known for his showmanship on WWE, with even MK creator Ed Boon endorsing him.
There are no release details for the Mortal Kombat sequel, but with Urban’s involvement, fans can expect a thrilling addition to the franchise.
