Amitabh Kant, India’s G20 Sherpa, has highlighted the risks and opportunities of artificial intelligence (AI) during the second G20-SAI Summit of the SAI20 Engagement Group. Kant acknowledged that while AI offers exciting new opportunities, such technologies bring with them new risks, threats to personal privacy, and concerns about fake news. He noted that the world is interconnected today with technology, and it plays a crucial role in the functioning and transformation, helping to collect, process, and disseminate information quickly and efficiently.

Kant added that with the vast data available, generative artificial intelligence is emerging and playing a critical role in citizens’ lives. He acknowledged that these technologies offer both positive and disruptive potential. However, he stressed that there is a need to realize that the future rapid advancements in AI, particularly the transformative potential of generative artificial intelligence, present new risks, fresh forms of discrimination and bias, and new threats to personal privacy, data protection, online safety, and concerns about fake news.

Kant emphasized that nations worldwide need to adopt a balanced approach to this new technology, and as G20 countries, a pro-innovation approach is essential to maximize the value of these technologies and offer entrepreneurs the freedom to innovate within a principle-based ethical framework. Risk mitigation can only be effective with early warning of new risks and imminent threats.

Kant further noted that during SAI India’s endeavours in its SAI20 Chairmanship, it aimed to amalgamate with India’s G20 priorities, including green development, climate finance and lifestyle for the environment, accelerated, inclusive and resilient growth, accelerating progress on Sustainable Development Goals, technological transformation and digital public infrastructure, and women-led development.

The CAG of India chose two important priority areas, Blue Economy and responsible artificial intelligence, for the SAI20 engagement group. These priorities align with India’s guiding philosophy, “One Earth One Family One future,” and they will have a great significance and direct impact on citizens’ lives.

Kant said that G20 needs to take the initiative and drop an action plan to counter the detrimental impacts of global warming and climate change by leveraging the oceans for conservation and preservation, protection, and sustainable development of the seas and the marine areas beyond national jurisdiction with the overall vision of clean and healthy oceans for a safe earth.

The emergence of generative artificial intelligence presents both risks and opportunities for human advancement. Nations worldwide need to adopt a balanced approach to this new technology, and as G20 countries, a pro-innovation approach is essential to maximize the value of these technologies and offer entrepreneurs the freedom to innovate within a principle-based ethical framework.
