May 11 is a significant day in India as it marks National Technology Day, which commemorates a series of underground nuclear tests conducted in Rajasthan in 1998. The successful completion of these tests established India as a nuclear power and led to the celebration of the scientists who made it possible. Today, National Technology Day is an opportunity to promote the development of science and technology and raise awareness of their role in economic growth.

Currently, nine countries possess nuclear weapons capabilities, and India is one of them. However, India also uses nuclear technology for power generation within the country. The significance of National Technology Day goes beyond India’s nuclear advancements as it serves as a reminder of the country’s efforts to use science and technology to develop since its independence in 1947.

25th Anniversary Celebrations and New Theme for 2023

National Technology Day 2023 marks the 25th anniversary of Operation Shakti, and a new theme is chosen every year. This year’s theme is “School to Startups- Igniting Young Minds to Innovate.” The government has planned an innovation showcase hosted by Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) and Niti Aayog at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. The showcase includes innovation zones, student innovators and entrepreneurs, and AIM’s programs and initiatives.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the program’s celebrations, which will run from May 11 to May 14. The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stones for multiple projects worth more than Rs. 5,800 crore. These include the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory-India at Hingoli, Maharashtra, the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Jatni, Odisha, and the Platinum Jubilee Block of Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai.

National Technology Day’s significance goes beyond India’s nuclear advancements and is an opportunity to inspire citizens to contribute to the scientific and technological progress of the country by pursuing STEM careers. By promoting innovation and technology, India can continue to grow and develop, becoming a leader in the global community.
