Blizzard Entertainment’s upcoming action role-playing game, Diablo IV, just released a live-action trailer ahead of its release on June 6th. The ad campaign, called “Saviors Wanted,” was directed by Chloe Zhao, the Oscar-winning director of Nomadland, and co-directed by Kiku Ohe. The trailer captures the fear and conflict that exists in the game’s world, the Sanctuary, which is filled with monsters. The High Heavens and Burning Hells are constantly battling, leaving the Sanctuary’s inhabitants in turmoil.

The trailer serves as a tour of the tragedy that exists in the game’s world. It starts with an aged man mourning over a stretch of dead horses in the Sanctuary’s icy tundras. The man pleads with the camera, speaking to the players who will save the lands from ruin. The trailer cuts back and forth between cries for help from other unfortunate inhabitants and epic shots of heroes fighting off hordes of demons. The heroes represent the five classes in Diablo IV: Barbarian, Sorcerer, Druid, Rogue, and the new Necromancer, who can summon and command corpses to perform their bidding. The trailer ends with a shot of Lilith, the Queen of the Succubi, emerging from the skies, waging war against her bitter enemy angel Inarius, and ruling over Sanctuary once more.

The Director’s Statement

Zhao said that working with Blizzard gave her the opportunity to bring the dark, thrilling, and imaginative world of Diablo IV to life. She acknowledged that Diablo fans are very passionate and have been with the game for over two decades. Zhao aims to honor the game’s rich lore and visceral world-building while evoking the strong emotions that players feel while immersing themselves in the game. This is not Zhao’s first time directing a feature film, as she won an Oscar for directing Nomadland. She also directed Marvel’s Eternals and is attached to direct an adaptation of Hamnet, which imagines the story of Agnes, William Shakespeare’s wife.

Endgame Progression and Release Date

Blizzard Entertainment recently detailed Diablo IV’s endgame progression, stating that it plans to keep players hooked for hundreds of hours after finishing the main story. The game will begin with a Capstone Dungeon that allows players to do repeated runs in rising difficulties to collect various loot and continue getting stronger. Nightmare Dungeons are also returning, letting players pick one out of 120+ dungeons in the Sanctuary and turn it into a harsher playfield. These can be activated by finding a Nightmare Sigil, which adds difficult objectives, increased enemy count, and portals that pour out monsters from other realms. Unfortunately, players have no control over when portals open up, so they must be prepared.

Diablo IV will be released on June 6th on PC (via Battle.net), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. Early access for Deluxe and Ultimate edition pre-orders begin on June 2nd in India and June 1st in the US. The game’s live-action trailer gives players a glimpse of the game’s world and its inhabitants, setting the stage for an epic adventure.
