Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen recently delivered a speech to parliament, which was partially written using an artificial intelligence tool, ChatGPT. The speech took place as parliament was preparing to close for the summer. While delivering the speech to legislators, Frederiksen explained that the content she was reading was not from her or any other human but, in fact, was written by ChatGPT. Despite some issues with the details of the government’s work program and punctuation, Frederiksen found it fascinating and terrifying what the tool was capable of.

ChatGPT, which gained notoriety last year for its ability to generate essays, poems, and conversations from brief prompts, has since become a topic of discussion. The programme’s success resulted in billions of dollars of investment into the field. However, critics and insiders have raised concerns about the tool’s potential to flood the web with disinformation, churn out racist material, or lay waste to entire industries through AI-powered automation.

The subject of AI is on the agenda for a high-level meeting on trade between the United States and the European Union, which took place in Lulea, Sweden, on Wednesday. During the meeting, a group of industry chiefs and experts, including Sam Altman, whose firm OpenAI created the ChatGPT bot, warned about the potential threat of “extinction” posed by the technology.

The section of Frederiksen’s speech that was drafted by ChatGPT included statements such as “It has been an honour and a challenge to lead a broad government in the last parliamentary year,” “We have worked hard to co-operate across parties and ensure a strong and sustainable future for Denmark,” and “We have taken steps to combat climate change and ensure a fairer and more inclusive society where all citizens have equal opportunities.” Despite the tool’s contribution to the speech, Frederiksen’s regular speechwriters have yet to comment on the quality of the writing.

The Danish Prime Minister’s utilization of ChatGPT to draft her speech highlights the revolutionary aspects and risks of AI. While AI technology has the potential to significantly advance society, it is important to consider the potential negative consequences of its use. The concerns raised surrounding ChatGPT include the possibility of disinformation and racist material, as well as the potential for AI-powered automation to lay waste to entire industries. As the world continues to develop and integrate AI technology, it is crucial to continue monitoring and addressing these concerns.
