Metal Gear Solid 3, a popular stealth-action game, made its PC debut recently as part of the Master Collection. However, it seems that the game’s arrival on PC has left players feeling disappointed. The Steam page for Snake Eater is flooded with negative reviews, highlighting issues such as the game being restricted to 720p resolution, frequent startup crashes, and the lack of support for Steam Deck. These shortcomings have certainly dampened the enthusiasm for this long-awaited return of MGS3 on PC.
Despite the disappointment surrounding the PC port, fans of the series have found a glimmer of hope in the form of the first proper gameplay trailer for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, the remake of Snake Eater. This remake has been a subject of rumors for quite some time, and earlier this year, Konami finally unveiled it with a pre-rendered teaser showing a detailed depiction of Naked Snake covered in mud. While the teaser was visually impressive, it did little to quell concerns about how the actual game would look and whether it would remain faithful to the original’s gripping story and engrossing world.
A Faithful Recreation of Snake Eater
Fortunately, the first gameplay footage of MGS Delta: Snake Eater showcased during the Xbox Partner Preview stream suggests that the remake is staying true to its promise. The gameplay trailer, claimed to be captured in real-time and rendered in Unreal Engine 5, reveals a highly faithful recreation of Snake Eater. The video demonstrates Snake sneaking up behind guards, going prone in long grass, lining up precise first-person headshots, shimmying along ledges, performing close-quarters combat maneuvers on unsuspecting enemies, and wading through chest-high water. As someone who has played the original Snake Eater multiple times, I am pleased to see that the up-rezzed levels in the remake closely resemble their original layout and appearance.
The trailer provides glimpses of iconic locations from Snake Eater, such as the chasm-spanning bridge, the building where players first meet Ocelot, the desert area with a hovering helicopter, and what appears to be the watery cave where the memorable boss battle against The Pain takes place. These areas, as far as my memory serves, stay true to the PlayStation 2 maps while receiving a visual upgrade with Unreal Engine 5’s impressive lighting, reflections, and particle effects. Additionally, the trailer showcases various animals that players can encounter, including frogs, vultures, rats, crabs, and snakes, all animated realistically in their respective environments.
A Promising but Enigmatic Future
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater appears to be a flashier and visually enhanced remake of the beloved original. However, despite the exciting footage, there is still no information about the game’s release date. Considering the current disappointment surrounding the PC debut of Metal Gear Solid 3, it might be worth waiting for a polished release. Fans of the series can only hope that the remake lives up to their expectations and provides a satisfactory return to the world of Snake Eater on modern platforms.
