Amazon is implementing a return-to-office policy that mandates corporate workers to be present in the office for three days a week. As part of this policy, the tech giant is asking some employees in smaller offices to relocate to main offices situated in larger cities. Although Amazon has not disclosed the exact number of employees required to move, the company has stated that it will provide relocation benefits and consider exceptions on a case-by-case basis.
Brad Glasser, an Amazon spokesperson, emphasized the benefits of increased collaboration and connections that have been observed since employees started working together at least three days per week. Glasser stated that Amazon is continually exploring ways to bring more teams together in the same locations, and decisions that impact employees will be communicated directly.
This move signifies an escalation of Amazon’s efforts to bring workers back to the office. In February, the company introduced a policy requiring employees to be present in the office for three days a week, which came into effect in May. The implementation of this policy led to protests by hundreds of corporate workers outside the company’s Seattle headquarters. Previously, Amazon had allowed team leaders to determine their teams’ work arrangements.
Amazon CEO, Andy Jassy, explained that the decision to bring employees back to the office was based on observations of what worked during the pandemic. Jassy noted that the senior leadership team analyzed employee performance and engaged in discussions with leaders from other companies. The conclusion drawn from these observations was that in-person interactions led to higher employee engagement and facilitated easier collaboration.
According to internal messages cited by Business Insider, Amazon employees who refuse to relocate near the main offices of their teams are being presented with two options: find a new job within the company or leave through voluntary resignation. In recent months, the company has already eliminated 27,000 jobs.
