Artificial intelligence (AI) has already made its way into the workplace, with many individuals using tools that incorporate AI technology. The potential of AI in advertising is immense, especially in email writing, researching, generating comps, writing social copy, and HR functions like hiring and reviews. However, while proponents argue that AI can take care of mundane tasks, freeing up time for more creative work, detractors point out that AI can amplify bias, expand surveillance, and threaten jobs, among other concerns. The regulatory landscape has not caught up with technology, leaving it up to individuals and companies to make ethical choices about AI use.

Guidelines for Workplace AI Use

To ensure ethical AI use in the workplace, the following guidelines are proposed:

1. Use a litmus test to determine whether AI should be used for a specific task. If you would be comfortable admitting it, then it is a better use case. If you would be embarrassed, then it is not a good indication to use AI.

2. Be transparent about inputs and outputs to avoid biased outcomes, and resist the temptation to ask for blatantly biased outputs or use AI to plagiarize.

3. Supplement simple, AI-generated outputs with critical thought and research to avoid ceding power to an invisible authority.

4. Companies should disclose the meaningful information about the logic involved in automated decisions, and individuals should have the right to challenge AI outcomes and get access to a human-led system of recourse.

5. Regularly audit AI tools to avoid amplifying bias, and prioritize human well-being over efficiency.

As AI continues to advance, it is crucial to be ready for its benefits, drawbacks, and unforeseeable changes. The goal is not to provide a set of commandments but to start a dialogue about responsible AI adoption to mitigate its risks and harness its incredible power while ensuring ethical use.
