WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging platform owned by Meta, introduced the Chat Lock functionality earlier this year, allowing users to lock specific chats using their fingerprint, facelock, or passcode. However, the platform is now reportedly testing a new secret code feature that will provide users with even greater control over their locked chats. This feature will allow users to choose a custom password for their protected chat folder, adding an additional layer of security for sensitive conversations.
According to WhatsApp features tracker WABetaInfo, the upcoming secret code feature has been spotted in WhatsApp for Android beta v2.23.21.9, which is currently available through the Google Play Beta program. This new security feature will enable users to set a personalized secret code that can be used to access their locked chats. By entering the secret code in the app’s search bar, users can unlock their protected conversations. Additionally, users will have the option to configure the secret code on companion devices, further expanding the security coverage.
Preview of the Secret Code Creation Feature
Although the feature is not yet available for testers, a preview of the secret code creation feature has been included in the report. WhatsApp suggests using a word or a simple emoji as the secret code for quick and easy access. Furthermore, users will have the flexibility to change or remove the secret code whenever they desire, providing them with complete control over their chat security.
WhatsApp initially released the Chat Lock feature in May for both Android and iOS users. This feature allows users to maintain the privacy and security of their messages and conversations by locking them with a passcode, fingerprint, or face unlock options. Locked chat threads are moved to a separate folder, ensuring the confidentiality of conversations even if unauthorized access to the user’s phone occurs.
In an effort to enhance user privacy and security, WhatsApp is constantly innovating and introducing new features. The upcoming secret code feature, currently being tested in the Android beta, will give users the ability to choose a custom password for their protected chat folder. This addition will provide an additional layer of security for sensitive conversations and allow users to have complete control over their chat security. With WhatsApp’s commitment to user privacy, it is expected that this new feature will be rolled out in a future update, ensuring the continued protection of user data.
