The highly anticipated release of Payday 3 earlier this week has left players frustrated and disappointed. As mentioned back in July, the game’s requirement for players to connect to a server, even in solo or private matches, has proven to be disastrous. The servers have been plagued with issues, forcing players to endure long queues just to play the game, and in some cases, preventing them from playing altogether.

The negative impact of this server problem is reflected in the game’s Steam reviews. With almost 19,000 reviews, Payday 3 currently sits at a disheartening “Mostly Negative” review score, with only 31% positive. The comments from players on the platform further emphasize the disappointment and anger surrounding the launch. One review highlights the outcry, stating, “Online only was a huge mistake.” Another frustrated player shares, “Imagine waiting for an hour and ten minutes and still not being able to get into a private game.” A particularly harsh review accuses the developers of orchestrating a heist by robbing players of an offline mode, adding fuel to the fire of discontent.

The official Payday X (formerly Twitter) account has been keeping track of the ongoing server issues. Slow matchmaking was acknowledged on September 21st, followed by a complete matchmaking outage the day after. Twelve hours ago, the account tweeted that players are now able to create lobbies again, but cautiously noted that there may still be some lingering issues being addressed. Throughout this entire ordeal, the Payday X account has been subjected to severe criticism from players who either cannot access the game or simply desire an offline mode.

Payday 3 does offer enjoyable levels and satisfactory shooting action, as noted by Alice B in her review. However, these positive aspects are overshadowed by the disappointment caused by the unreliable matchmaking system. It is not the mere fact that the matchmaking doesn’t work that frustrates players, but the absence of control options that were available in its predecessor. This lack of improvement is disheartening, as it implies that Payday 3 could have been an exceptional game receiving favorable reviews on Steam if it had prioritized an offline mode.

The launch of Payday 3 has proven to be a major letdown for players. The decision to make the game online-only has backfired tremendously, with the server issues causing extreme frustration and resulting in a substantial negative reception. The developers must address these problems promptly and provide a solution to appease their disappointed player base. Otherwise, the reputation of Payday 3 may be tarnished irreparably, further damaging the trust and support of the gaming community.
