Microsoft and Xbox have had a difficult few days after the UK competition regulator blocked the company’s $69 billion acquisition of Call of Duty maker Activision Blizzard over cloud gaming concerns. Xbox’s first big exclusive of the year, Redfall, also received largely negative reviews upon its release, with critics pointing out the game’s technical and creative shortcomings. In response to the backlash, Xbox Chief Phil Spencer has taken “full responsibility” for the game’s disappointing reception.

Xbox’s Future Plans

In a recent interview, Spencer discussed Xbox’s recent failures, community expectations, and future plans. He expressed disappointment and regret over Redfall’s poor launch and admitted that the game’s critical response fell short of internal expectations. Spencer also defended Redfall developer Arkane Austin, stating that the studio’s creative aspirations would not be compromised.

Regarding the British antitrust regulator’s move to block Microsoft’s takeover of Activision Blizzard, Spencer maintained that the company intended to appeal the decision to bring the lucrative portfolio under its umbrella.

Spencer also addressed the so-called “console wars,” stating that Xbox does not intend to compete with Sony or Nintendo in terms of console hardware. Instead, the company will focus on unique services such as Game Pass, cloud and PC gaming.

Overall, while Xbox has faced setbacks in recent days, Spencer remains committed to the company’s vision and is looking forward to future successes.
