Truecaller, a popular caller identification service, has announced that it will soon be offering its service on messaging apps, including WhatsApp, to help users identify potential spam calls over the internet. The company’s CEO, Alan Mamedi, has revealed that the feature is currently in beta and will be released globally later in May.

The Growing Problem of Spam Calls in India

According to a recent report by Truecaller, telemarketing and scam calls have been on the rise in countries such as India, where the average user receives around 17 spam calls per month. This has prompted India’s telecom regulator to direct carriers such as Jio and Airtel to implement artificial intelligence filters to block telemarketing calls over their networks. Truecaller is also in discussions with telecom operators to introduce a similar solution.

Mamedi has stated that the company has seen a recent increase in user reports from India regarding spam calls over WhatsApp. This is due to telemarketers adopting internet calling, which is a relatively new development in the market. WhatsApp is the most widely used messaging platform in India, and the company claims to use spam detection technology to identify and take action against accounts engaging in abnormal behaviour, allowing users to block and report problematic accounts.

Truecaller’s Revenue Model and User Base
India is Truecaller’s largest market, with 250 million users, and the company has 350 million users worldwide. It generates revenue through advertising, subscription services, and verified listings from businesses. By expanding its caller identification service to messaging apps, Truecaller aims to combat spam calls and provide a more comprehensive solution for its users.
