CD Projekt Red, the developers of popular games like The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077, has denied rumours of an acquisition by Sony. Speculation arose after reports surfaced that Sony was looking to enhance its acquisition game to a ‘completely new level.’ The rumour was further fuelled by a Discord post by leaker Liz, who primarily specialises in Destiny-based content. Liz claimed that PlayStation was planning to acquire CD Projekt Red and that Days Gone 2 was in development. However, Jeff Ross, the director of Days Gone, denied the latter claim, alluding that Sony ‘doesn’t seem to care for it.’
CD Projekt Red’s response
During the company’s Q1 2023 earnings conference, CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kiciński stated that “nothing has changed on our end.” He went on to say, “So, I can repeat what we have been saying throughout the years… CD Projekt is not for sale. We want to remain independent. We have, I believe an excellent strategy. Not easy to execute, for sure, but it’s very exciting to follow our path. So it’s a pure rumour.” Although acquisition rumours may not seem far-fetched, the company has multiple projects in development. A takeover would likely provide additional resources to meet project deadlines.
CD Projekt Red’s projects
CD Projekt Red is currently working on multiple projects, including the upcoming Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, which will be playable at the Summer Game Fest’s Play Days event. The company is also developing a brand-new The Witcher trilogy on Unreal Engine 5, with plans to release the entire saga within six years of the first title’s release. Additionally, a full-blown open-world remake of the original 2007 The Witcher game is in development by Polish studio Fool’s Theory, consisting of veteran staff from the series.
Last month, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) acquired Firewalk Studios to help build an ‘original AAA multiplayer game’ for PS5 and PC. Their other recent acquisitions include Destiny creator Bungie, Returnal developer Housemarque, porting veterans Nixxes Software, and Bluepoint Games — best known for the PlayStation-exclusive remakes of Shadow of the Colossus and Demon’s Souls.
