In a bid to increase user engagement and monetization on Twitter, Elon Musk has announced that the platform will be cancelling accounts that have been inactive for an extended period. Musk, who purchased Twitter for $44 billion last year, stated in a tweet that accounts that have been dormant for several years would be purged. The move is expected to result in a decrease in follower counts for users.

Musk’s Changes to Twitter

Musk has implemented a series of changes at Twitter, including reducing staff and removing free verification check marks that were previously seen as a sign of authenticity. However, these changes have been met with resistance from users and advertisers alike. Twitter’s blue ticks, which were reinstated on certain media and celebrity accounts in April, were protested by many recipients. Musk tweeted that he was personally paying for a few subscriptions, but this did not appease all those who had lost their verified status.

Relaxed Moderation and Falling Revenues

Since Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, the company has relaxed its moderation of content on the platform, allowing many users who had been banned for spreading misinformation or inciting hatred to return. However, this has led to advertisers avoiding the platform, resulting in a decline in Twitter’s revenue. Despite efforts to increase engagement, Twitter still faces significant challenges.
